Panathinaikos is the Greek League Champion. For the 33rd time in the history of the Greek Championship and its own history, Panathinaikos conquered the title. The Greens swept Olympiacos 3-0 in a game at the SEF arena, an encounter never to end. With 1’27’’ pending on the game clock, Stephane Lasme to have made the score 72-76, riots resulted in both teams to abandon the court and ultimately in the game being officially interrupted.
The game was a derby from minute 1. Olympiacos led first (5-0, 2’30’’), but Panathinaikos balanced out the game (8-8, 4’36’’) to take the lead (14-24, 9’31’’). From that point forward and all the way down to the end neither team was able to clearly grasp the game reigns. The clover maintained the lead but the gap gradually reduced only for the home team to tie (28-28, 13’36’’), then to lead (39-35, half time score).
Panathinaikos reacted and after the first three minutes of the second half regained the lead (45-49, 24’), but the game still had a long way to go, the lead to swap hands. The third quarter rested at 61-60, but the Greens were determined not to allow the victory escape their grasp. Two big time triples drained by Dimitris Diamantidis led to +7 (63-70, 32’14’’). Although the hosts managed to cut back their deficit and lead once more (71-70 at 35’38’’ and 72-70 at 36’22). Stephane Lasme behind a pair of shots from the line made the score 72-72 (36’35’’), Diamantidis to add two charity baskets of his own to get the score board reading 72-74 (37’11’’). Lasme starred in the next play, jogged the score to 72-76, at which point riots broke out, items being throw in the court amongst other incidents. The result was both teams to leave the floor. After the recess which lasted almost over an hour, the referees decide to officially interrupt the encounter.
