In the finals of a historic Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament, a new annual event to remember a late giant of European basketball, it will be Fenerbahce Istanbul against the host side Panathinaikos OPAP Athens. Fenerbahce edged Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv after overtime 94-92 on Thursday night in Athens, Greece before Panathinaikos downed Khimki Moscow Region 90-63.
In the second game, Panathinaikos OPAP pulled away to a double-digit lead in the third quarter with a help of Nick Calathes assists and dunks from Thanasis Antetokounmpo and James Gist. The Greens held 62-50 going into the final quarter, before an 18-5 run opened an 84-62 margin, sealing the deal. Panathinaikos had four scorers in double digits. Ioannis Papapetrou led the way with 15 plus 6 rebounds, DeShaun Thomas netted 14, James Gist added 13 points plus 6 boards, and Keith Langford scored 12. For Khimki, Alexey Shved scored 16 points, and Malcolm Thomas added 13 points and 5 rebounds.
In the final of “Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament”, Panathinaikos will face Fenerbahce on Friday's night (20.30) at OAKA.
