Far from its good self, Panathinaikos was defeated by CSKA Moscow in Russia by 91-75, in the context of the Euroleague regular season 9th competition date.
The “Greens” found themselves trailing behind in the score in the first minutes (13-7, 4’), and got to a double-digit score difference against it (26-16 (7’55’’), before showing the first real and long-term signs of reaction. Starting with the last minutes of the first quarter and all through the second quarter, Panathinaikos managed to balance the situation. By minute 12’25’’ it managed to take the lead for the first time (28-29), to complete the first half in the game with a 2-point lead (47-49).
Returning on court, it was CSKA Moscow that imposed its pace and got the game right where it wanted. It made the most of its successful shooting in the three-pointers in the first half, got the ball closer to the basket in the second, and clearly got to the free throw line more times than Panathinaikos. By minute 23’ it had already built a margin of 12 points to its favor (61-49) and continued in the same pace. Some brief “clover” outburst did not suffice to overturn the situation that had already been created. Every time Panathinaikos seemed to close down on the gap, the home team would find a way to break ahead in the score again, reaching up to a 17-point lead +17 (84-67, 35’40’’) and ultimately getting to the final score of 91-75.
