Panathinaikos edged Aris 81-62 for BasketLeague OPAP game 14 at the OAKA indoor arena.
Panathinaikos broke away from tip-off quite astonishingly as aspired. After the initial 0-2 (0’40’’) the Greens cruised ahead behind a 11-0 run to 11-2 (3’48’’) and managed to maintain a safety gap for quite some time, which it actually managed to expand in the progress of the clash. After a mini Aris counteraction and 11-7 (5’48’’), Panathinaikos picked up the pace. It gathered the boards, had good collaborations (11 assists for the first half), it enforced pressure in defense, result being the advantage to mount to +19 (34-15, 14’45’’); advantage which Panathinaikos approached slightly later once more (44-25, 19’), teams heading towards the locker rooms for the recess 14 points apart (44-30).
Encounter image failed to change much in the first minutes of the second half. Aris though got a small margin to fight back, go-to-guy of the deployment Muhamed Pasalic. A partial 12-2 in which he drained 10 points got the gap reduced to 6 points (51-45, 26’20’’). The Greens gradually re-established the pace that had provided them with the point spread they had accumulated earlier and deriving energy from backcourt once more got their guests within 19 points again (66-47 at 32’20’’, 69-50 at 33’20’’). Panathinaikos touched +20 for the first time behind Gaios Skordilis (73-53, 35’40’’). Four consecutive points chipped in by James Gist got the score board reading 79-55, only for Ukic to form final game score 81-62.
Panathinaikos competed without Jonas Maciulis and Marcus Banks.
