Panathinaikos announces the deal with DeMarcus Nelson for 2 years with an option for extension on the summer of 2015.
Combo guard DeMarcus Nelson (1.89 m/6 ft 2.5 in) was born in Oakland, California, on November 2, 1985. He graduated from the famous Duke University where he had a pivotal role in the basketball team –– he was team’s captain in his last season there (2007–2008) averaging 14.5 points, 3 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Following his exceptional performances Golden State Warriors offered him a contract in September 2008, before assigning him to Bakersfield Jam of the NBA D-League. His first European destination was KK Zagreb, but he did not stay long and repatriated to the USA for the Austin Toros in the D-League. In April 2009 he returned to the NBA for the Chicago Bulls.
The same year he played in Italy for SS Scandone Avellino and in 2010 he moved to France for Cholet Basket. His next stop was Ukraine for a fourth-month spell at BC Donetsk, before returning to Cholet Basket where he had the chance to play in the Euroleague for the first time.
In 2012 he left France for Serbia and Crvena Zvezda (Red Star), where he stayed two years and became the team’s leader. Last year he faced Panathinaikos BC in the Euroleague regular season. Also, his name featured in the list of the best five players of the Adriatic League and the Eurocup, and he was named the 2013–14 Euroleague Round 4 MVP.
In the Euroleague 2013–2014 he averaged 11.2 points, 4 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 26.4 minutes per game, while in the Eurocup 2013–2014 he had an average of 13.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 31.7 minutes per game.
