Real Madrid survived a double-overtime thriller to edge Panathinaikos OPAP Athens 93-97 at OAKA on Tuesday night.
Real grabbed its third straight win – and 11th in a row against its Greek opponent – to improve to 9-5 on the season. Panathinaikos dropped its second in a row at home to fall to 4-9. Real led by as many as 14 in the second half before Nemanja Nedovic sparked a comeback.
The Greens had the ball for the last shot at both the end of regulations and the first overtime period, but came away empty both times. Walter Tavares played a career-high 41 minutes and set a personal-best with a performance index rating of 36 after combining 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the winners. Alberto Abalde was the hero of the overtimes with 15 points and 3 assists over the game's final 10 minutes; he finished with 19 points and 6 assists. Anthony Randolph added 18 points, Trey Thompkins scored 12 and Jaycee Carroll 11. Nedovic finished with 27 points for Panathinaikos, Ioannis Papapetrou tallied 18 points and 7 rebounds, Georgios Papagiannis scored 14 and Ben Bentil 13 in defeat.
